Yes. Caps for a bun exist, and so do baseball caps with a magnetic opening. A normal cap fails with a bun because the only gap is the small one above the strap. Caps made for long hair open at the back instead, with magnets, with crossed elastic bands or with a Velcro flap, so a bun, a high ponytail or a braid sits outside the cap.
Which caps fit over a bun?
Any cap whose back opens wide enough. In practice there are three designs:
- Magnetic back. The back panel splits and closes again around the base of your hair. The PonyLoop® Original works like this, and so do the caps of the Canadian brand Ponyback.
- Crossed elastic bands. The bands stretch apart and hug the hair. This is the design of the PonyLoop® Vintage and Glitter. It suits high and low hairstyles, including a casual messy bun.
- Open back with Velcro. The US brand Ponyflo uses this.
A very large, high bun needs the most room. If yours is big, a magnetic or fully open back is easier than bands.
Is there a baseball cap with a magnetic opening for a ponytail?
Yes. We know of two. The PonyLoop® Original closes with magnets at the back: put the cap on, pull the ponytail or bun through, let the magnets close. It comes in black, gray, navy and white, one size for 54 to 62 cm, and costs 24.99 €. Ponyback, from Canada, also uses a magnetic seam and sells its caps in seven sizes.
Is it worth it? If you change your hairstyle during the day, yes, because the opening adjusts in a second and the cap looks like a normal cap from behind when closed. If you always wear the same ponytail for sport, crossed bands hold just as well.

Are there caps made for long hair in general?
Caps with a back opening are the ones made for long hair. They are usually sold as ponytail caps, but the opening does not care what you put through it: ponytail, bun, braid or long curls gathered loosely. With curls, the point is that the hair is not pressed flat under the crown.
For winter the same idea exists as a beanie. Our beanies have a ponytail opening too, and the Silk Beanie has a silky lining.
What should I check before buying?
- Height of your usual hairstyle. High bun: magnetic or open back. Ponytail for sport: bands.
- Size. One size caps need a way to adjust. PonyLoop® covers 54 to 62 cm and includes a foam insert that takes off about 2 to 3 cm.
- Delivery to your country and how long it takes. We deliver to Germany via de.ponyloop.com and to 31 other European countries, including the UK and the Netherlands, via eu.ponyloop.com, usually within 1 to 3 weeks after payment. See shipping information.
- Exchange terms. Ours are on the returns and exchanges page.
Frequently asked questions
Do any caps fit over a bun, not just a ponytail?
Yes. Caps with a magnetic back, crossed elastic bands or an open Velcro back let a bun sit outside the cap. Every PonyLoop® cap is made for ponytail, bun and braid.
What is a good cap for a messy bun?
One whose opening adapts to the height of the bun. The PonyLoop® Original opens with magnets, and the Vintage and Glitter use crossed elastic bands that suit high and low hairstyles.
Is there a baseball cap with a magnetic opening?
Yes. The PonyLoop® Original has a magnetic closure at the back, and the Canadian brand Ponyback uses a magnetic seam.
Does a ponytail cap also fit a high bun?
Yes, if the back opens wide enough. A magnetic or fully open back gives a big, high bun the most room.
Where can I buy one in the UK or the Netherlands?
PonyLoop® takes orders from the UK and the Netherlands at eu.ponyloop.com. Delivery usually takes 1 to 3 weeks after payment.
