How Does a Cap with a Ponytail Opening Work? The Mechanism Explained

A cap with a ponytail opening has a specially designed opening at the back that lets your ponytail, bun or braid pass through easily — at any height and without crushing your hairstyle. Depending on the model, this opening works differently: the PonyLoop® Original uses a magnetic closure, while the PonyLoop® Vintage uses a CrissCross opening. Here we explain both mechanisms in detail and answer the questions we get asked most often.

What is a ponytail opening and where is it located?

The ponytail opening is an opening at the back of the cap that is much larger and more flexible than the narrow crescent cutout of a classic baseball cap. On a regular cap, that cutout sits right above the adjustment strap, so your ponytail can only come out very low at the nape. A true ponytail opening, however, extends across the back of the cap and lets your hairstyle come out where it actually sits: low at the nape, halfway up or as a high bun at the crown. The brim, fit and look remain those of a regular cap.

How does the magnetic closure of the PonyLoop® Original work?

On the Original, the back of the cap opens and closes with a magnetic closure. Here's how it works: You open the magnets, put the cap on, pull your ponytail or bun through the opening and let the magnets snap back together. The back closes around your hairstyle instead of flattening it. The advantage of this mechanism: it adjusts seamlessly to the height of your hairstyle. Whether it's a low ponytail in the morning or a high messy bun in the afternoon, you simply change the position where you guide your hair through the opening and the magnets close the rest. Put it on and go, no fussing.

How does the CrissCross opening work on Vintage and Glitter?

On the Vintage and the Glitter, crossed elastic bands do the work — hence the name CrissCross. The bands stretch across the back opening and give way exactly where your hair needs to pass through. You simply push your ponytail or bun between the bands and they wrap around it elastically. Because the bands are under slight tension, the cap stays especially secure: even when your ponytail swings while jogging or dancing, everything stays in place. The CrissCross design adapts equally well to high and low hairstyles, from a sleek ponytail to a casual messy bun.

Which hairstyles work with the ponytail opening?

In short: all hairstyles that should come out the back of the cap. Most commonly these are the classic ponytail (low, medium or high), the bun or messy bun, braided styles and braids, and thick, voluminous hair that won't fit under a closed cap. The principle also works with curls because the opening lets the hair pass through instead of compressing it. The only requirement: your hair should be long enough to tie back.

Does a cap with a ponytail opening fit every head?

All PonyLoop® caps are one size and fit head circumferences from 54 to 62 cm. A black foam insert is included — the sizing clip. It attaches inside to the sweatband and reduces the cap by about 2–3 cm; this is ideal if your head circumference is under 56 cm. To measure, place a tape measure about 1 cm above your ears and wrap it once around your head. All details about fit can be found in our FAQ.

How do you put the cap on correctly in three steps?

Faster than any instructions would suggest — here's how:

  • Step 1: Tie your hairstyle the way you want to wear it — ponytail, bun or braid, at any height.
  • Step 2: Put the cap on and guide your hairstyle through the opening. With the magnetic closure, open the magnets briefly first; with the CrissCross design, push your hair directly between the bands.
  • Step 3: Check the fit, straighten the brim if needed — done. No restyling, no crushing, no crooked fit.

How do you care for a cap with a ponytail opening?

It's best to hand wash your PonyLoop® with cold water and let it air dry. This keeps the fabric, brim and mechanism in shape and color the longest — this applies to the magnetic closure as well as the elastic CrissCross bands. We advise against using a washing machine and dryer. Still have questions about fit, shipping or returns? The answers are in our FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions.
